Hiroshi Shimizu and Kinuyo Tanaka - Two Japanese Masters (w/ Miguel Patrício)
Plan-Séquence and Miguel Patrício, a Japanese film expert get together for comprehensive conversation on directors Hiroshi Shimizu and Kinuyo Tanaka. These two film artists have been somewhat overlooked and remained in the shadows of more famous native counterparts like Yasujiro Ozu, Kenji Mizoguchi, Akira Kurosawa, Mikio Naruse and other classic Japanese film directors. However, their legacy has suffered a revaluation more recently and they are now slowly being rediscovered, in an effort to push them towards their deserved status as utterly significant filmmakers in the country's history. In this dialogue, Miguel Patrício takes us far and beyond the directors’ films, shedding light on th...

Lijo Jose Pellissery's Jallikattu is quite the experience, a rambunctious and wildly dynamic Indian film in Malayalam language that has everything an entertainment production should have and does it mostly right, especially from a cinematographic standpoint. Can anyone tell me what the final musical name was in close-up, I searched for many years without results,
Rented this movie a year or two after its release. I was touched by Sakia's beauty and kindness, such a young naive girl. The scene where Raymond asked his neighbor about screams/noises possibly heard the night before still causes me anguish. By far the best and most intense horror I ever watched. Never felt comfortable seeing it again. I still find it appalling that the director George Sluizer made a Hollywood ''Walt Disneyesque'' version of his masterpiece. Great review. Thank you!
@@Gingerwhale You're very welcome Gingerwhale and I share your assessment of the film as well. All the best to you!
Great film.
For sure, quiet and far from flashy, but utterly spectacular in its subdued and intimate portrayal of disaffection and disenchantment.
If anyone is thinking of watching this, do! The way its able to capture emotion through simply filming people combined with beautiful composition and the way it manages to create a narrative with no plot and minimum dialogue, is amazing. Best film experience I've had in such a long time

11:00 My first Angelopoulos (I’m Greek). Around 1985 probably, I was 15 and my brother brought the 12th grade new History schoolbook which I found amazing. It was about 20th century and had an extended section about art, including 5-6 pages about world cinema and maybe one about Greek cinema. This page mentioned only 4 Greek directors (Tzavelas, Cacoyiannis, Koundouros and Angelopoulos), so I was intrigued that I knew nothing about the most recent one, or by the fact he was already in history books. This is a different era, the pro-internet era, there are no DVDs or even VHS in Greece, there’s only television with 2 channels and everything it plays we watch it anyway. Maybe a few months later, the TV announces the Traveling Players will be broadcasted for the first time (in 2 parts), which is considered a huge event. I sat down and watched it, I remember in the first 5 minutes instantly appreciating the line “Won’t you collect your bastard” as about how such a short line is poetic, realistic and revealing at the same time. I didn’t understand much, I was confusing the persons (who is who), I didn’t get the Oresteia connection, I didn’t get the change of era within the same shot, many of the political and historical references and much more but I was certainly impressed by all the other aspects. By now I have seen all of his films, by an average 6-12 times each, I even played as an extra to watch him working at close and I really love him and feel he defined my development.
@@thessaloniki9653 Thank you for sharing your experience with the films and process of Angelopoulos. He truly is one of the defining filmmakers of the past half century and one of my personal favourites. A hugely influential and remarkable artist.
Censored in 2024 by RUclips
@@user-ms8hz7ui3i Unfortunately that's the fate for a creator on this platform nowadays. Either you censor yourself or RUclips will forcibly censor you, if it goes against their guidelines, which can sometimes be somewhat ludicrous. This is a magnificent film, a veritable work of art, that deserves to be discovered by all people in its entirety.
@@PlanSéquenceFilmArt maybe 2024 until 2068 will be the same with this strict censorship? just like the past. the history repeating itself again and again.

I found the two unknown cyclists clad in yellow rain coats on bicycles, enigmatic . They also appeared in a scene in 'Eternity and a Day'.
They appear in several of Angelopoulos films, The Suspended Step of the Stork too, and they have specific symbolism which I'll explore later on.
Whatever symbolism they might carry...they themselves look so ......mystic. They had their own beauty in an inexplicable way. Tarkovsky also explored things in his films which are beautiful in their own way. Critics later themselves made symbolism and metaphors. That's why according to Tarkovsky his films were best understood by children who don't judge or conclude.
@@feriwaala6316 Yes, that's very true, but in Angelopoulos, these men either perform specific tasks, or appear in thematically connected moments of the same nature. Once one understands that, the meaning of their appearance, together with the intrinsic beauty and appeal of their presence, acquires an even greater power. Cheers.

Are there any general film magazines you recommend?
I read mostly books on Film but I learned a lot about world cinema with Sight & Sound and concerning cinematography specifically, American Cinematographer is also pretty good.
Thanks so much. The "holy fool" archetype in Russian culture, I think, is an important undercurrent in this and other Tarkovsky films. The tonal quality of Arseny Tarkovsky's poetry makes me wish I spoke Russian.

Everyone’s a critic. It’s a beautiful film for its time and intention. Other films followed with different agendas. All are valuable.
Yep, that sounds quite fair to my ears. Thanks for the input, mate.
Brilliant essays brother. With the insights you have given so far about this film its now become an experience that is more whole and autobiographically complete. I am not a russian speaker nor was interestwd in Russia in general but was introduced to Russian culture present and past through Tarkovsky and Dosteyevsky. And to be honest my views about life have changed through these two people. One should not shy away from taking into account that orthodox christian roots and spiritual style of poetic imagery tarkovsky uses. After watching all of his films i am sure he was a deeply religious man. He is on the same realm as Maulana Rumi and muslim and orthodox mystics. Rumi's craft were words and his craft is Time itself. There can never be any other artist like Tarkovsky ever. Thanks again
Thank you for your appreciation and impassioned response, dear Nabeel. I'm glad you have found these videos helpful or informative in some way. I too agree that Tarkovsky was an artist without comparison, with a very singular vision, and definitely a spiritual man. All the best to you my friend.
Outstanding analysis of an outstanding and still singular film. Sluizer never managed to replicate this brilliance with his American films but this stands the test of time long after him
Hey Andrew, thanks for the comment and I totally agree with you. Most thriller and horror films tend to lose much of their power after one or two decades, but this film has a little less than 40 years and is still chilling from beginning to end. It hasn't turned out cheesy or cheap, remains startling and realistic as when it came out and that says much about it, I think. Cheers.
